Pearl of the Orient:
It was a much-welcomed respite to Batu Ferringhi. As usual, the sight of water, the sound of waves rolling by is always good therapy. But take a walk towards the beach, and reality kicks in, much to my disappointment - it was filthy, with paper scraps on the beach, huts along the waterfront, and as soon as you look like you are stepping onto the sand from the hotel, someone asks if you want to parasail? or reflexology??

Looks like we have to look for a more private, serene beach holiday next time.

Penang drivers seem to be on permanent "Sunday cruise" and spaced out in the middle of the day. They don't recognise street signs, demarcation lines on the road, and much less care for whoever else is on the road. They just do as they please, change lanes whenever they want to - maybe they think they are invisible and invincible!
